About Us
Kind Hearts • Stronger Community
Our Mission
To build a stronger, safer, and more compassionate community through kindness, outreach, advocacy, and action — meeting people facing homelessness, addiction, mental health challenges, poverty, and social isolation where they are, with dignity, respect, and without judgment.
Through street outreach, community clean-up initiatives, harm reduction support, resource connection, volunteer engagement, and acts of everyday kindness, we strive to create meaningful change and restore hope within our city.
Our Vision
A Sault Ste. Marie where homelessness is rare, brief, and non-recurring — where every person has a safe home, and where neighbours show up for one another with compassion. We work toward functional zero for chronic homelessness as a community-wide goal, alongside our partners.
Our Guiding Principles
- Housing FirstPeople do not need to earn housing. A stable home is the foundation everything else is built on.
- Dignity first, judgment-freeEvery interaction begins with respect. We meet people where they are — on the street, in a tent, in a shelter.
- Indigenous-led solutionsPrograms affecting Indigenous community members are designed and delivered with — and where appropriate by — Indigenous organizations, elders, and people with lived experience.
- Lived experience at the tablePeople who have experienced homelessness shape our programs, our outreach approach, and our advocacy — not as tokens, but as decision-makers.
- Prevention is kinder and cheaper than crisisKeeping someone housed costs a fraction of shelter stays and emergency responses — and costs the person far less trauma.
- Transparency and accountabilityWe report what we do, what it costs, and what changed — publicly, every year.
Who We Serve
Individuals facing homelessness, addiction, mental health challenges, poverty, and social isolation throughout Sault Ste. Marie — met where they are, whether that means essential supplies during outreach, connections to local resources, or simply a conversation and a reminder that they are not alone.
Every interaction matters. Every person matters. Together, we are building a stronger, more compassionate community — one act of kindness at a time.
